not surprised, but very pleased
he's staying. here's what he had to say:
I hope to stay for as long as I can keep running. I could not face leaving the fans. They are like my family. I hope to finalise all the details today. My team showed me I didn't have to leave. They showed me they had heart. Everything was up in the air for a very long time. But at the end of the day, the team raised their game. Don't get me wrong. I love Barcelona. But on Wednesday night, Arsenal showed me they had heart.

i liked everthing up to 'my team showed me i didn't have to leave' you know, the first time i read that it came out very arrogant. like arsenal had to rise to his standards to keep him there. like everything rode on that champions league game. me thinks that someone is getting too big for his britches. but am i surprised? no. all the greats are like that.
joe cole is even starting to annoy me
ok - so i just heard the radio interview with henry and it was waaaaaay better. you can hear the sincerity in his voice that he really wants to stay. sometimes the written word isn't so reliable.
soemthing i wanted to add...i said earlier in the season that i thought henry was a porr captain. i still think he was back when i said it, but he's grown into the part now and i take it back. today and for at least the last month, henry has been a captain to rival tony adams. brian had the faith all along, and he was right.
I must say I am somewhat surprised and greatly relieved to hear Henry has signed for another four years.
Just for the record, I too was sceptical about Henry as a captain. I just felt (and continue to feel) that Henry as a player is irreplaceable.
As an aside, I find it amusing how the salaries of soccer players are always reported per week instead of the usual annual figures. For example the TSN article on the signing suggests Henry's deal is worth "as much as 130,000 pounds ($273,625 Cdn) a week". Doing the conversion puts that at around $14 million per year which is somewhat below the top NBA/MLB players. The weekly figures just make the numbers seem that much more outrageous (it will take me several years to earn what Henry gets each week!).
didn't ballack just sign a ridiculous deal with chelsea - something like 250,000 pounds a week?
i think it was more like 260,000 pounds, but yeah he did.
yay henry!!! i am so glad you're staying.
