canada sucks
okay, i don't get the physical newspaper, so things may be different there, but i went on to the globe and mail.com today to see where U20 Canada's famous (at least it should be) victory over brazil was, hoping it would be on the front page as it should be front page news. but was it where it should be? nope. instead, globe and mail's top sports story was the edmonton oilers win against anaheim (that's fair. i'm okay with that). then the next story was that the czech republic is going for gold at the world championships of hockey (and i can understant that too because hockey trumps everything in canada). but the last cover story was that the detroit pistons evened up their series. and that's just crap.
canada's boys scored canada's first two goals in the history of games against brazil, and they beat the southa american giants. that is huge! and they get relegated to the back pages of internet news. is it any wonder we can't get our kids playing soccer at a high level. what's teh incentive. even when they do somethign amazing nobody cares. i shudder to think what the attendance at next years U20 world cup is going to have. I for one hope to get to as many games as i possibly can.

its unfortunate they weren't on the cover - the 30 mins of the game i caught were absolutely extraordinary!
maybe we can get some people excited about next year's U20...we have some time to do it!
In the Herald this morning the front page has the Oilers victory and an article about Owen Hargreaves. The U20 game gets a couple of paragraphs on page four (along with the Henry signing).
It was a great game, but it had two things going against it: it was at the U20 level and it was a friendly.
yes, the fact that this was a friendly means very little in terms of Canada's "accomplishment".
funny story. last summer, which I spent in Ukraine in it's entirety, I would always play with the antenna on TV to see if I could catch some football matches. (i couldn't watch anything else cause it sucked). luckily enough, I found a channel coming from Poland that aired every single U20 World Cup match (held in Netherlands) and I watched about 3/4th of that competition.
as good as Ukraine's 4 games were, Brazil were simply magical. yes, the same Brazil that lost to Canada yesterday. I remember one match where they played Germany and were down 1-0 until they remembered that they're all Brazilians and all hell broke loose. I couldn't believe how good these kids played the last 40 minutes. I even wondered if the national German team would hold these teens off the scoreboard, they were that skilled. They came back to tie it and killed off the Germans in extra time. It was one of the greatest games I've watched on that level. (they lost to Argentina in the semi's).
in conclusion, I guess it is somewhat rewarding that Canada won, but i'm certain had this match mattered or had any significance, Canada wouldn't be able to get the ball out of their own half.
Oh and also, only half the squad who played in Edmonton were starters in Netherlands last summer. (i'm not sure if they reached age limit or if they didn't make the trip).
taras, i think you are forgetting that we're talking about canada. for canada, beating brazil in a friendly is a MASSIVE accomplishment -- regardless of the team brazil was fielding or brazil's lack of desire. and don't make the mistake of assuming that because it was a friendly it wasn't in the papers. that assumes that canadian sports writers can actually differentiate between friendlies and competitives. they rarely can. and certainly ANY victory over brazil is more nationally important than whether or not the detroit pistons tied their nba series. friendly or no, there is no excuse for the papers' decisions to ignore this win.
