This move shouldn't surprise anybody. Who else could afford him? I really have to wonder at what point players are going to look at Chelski and figure there is no point going to play there because there are already too many players to get any playing time. Who plays: Ballack or Lampard? Wright-Phillips or Joe Cole? Essien or Makelele?

Here's a nice article from 2004: Chelsea 'Won't buy Galacticos

well, personally i hope its lampard, cole and essien (or makalele)..i can do without the others.

and i think you're right - when will players decide that they'd rather play than be a bench warmer (or a part time player at best)?

maybe portsmouth will start buying up a galaxy team - they now have ruski backing...

sadly, the players don't always have a choice, especailly when chelski is tossing around ungodly transfer fees. certainly ballack has a choice, but the likes of swp do not. they go where their original club sends them, so long as the transfer price is right.

what will come soon is a time when those on the chelsea bench can't take it anymore and the team falls apart internally. i think that's inevitable.

as for who will be in the midfield...if ballack comes lampard goes. don't believe me? ronaldhino wants him in barcelona, his wife is from barcelona, he has a house in barcelona, and has anyone noticed his gorgeous tan lately? that's not from the london fog. that's from barcelona. so i say it is ballack in and frankie out. and to be truthful, gio, that's far better for you. frank is good, but he's no ballack. i'd say ballack is one of the top three midfielders in the world alive today (not that frank's bad...he's definitely in the top ten).

oh ya - lampard would go in a flash. (i'm having an a-ha moment). never thought of that.

i don't think ballack is better than lampard, if anything, they're the same player, with a height difference.

and chelsea's midfield is good, it's the strikers they need, not ballack.

but enough about chelsea, tuesday night will they will be forgotten, sadly and unfairly.

don't forget the looks difference and ballack's lack of a hunchback, taras. i see a lot of similarities between ballack and lampard, no doubt, but ballack has one thing that lampard doesn't that catapults him way beyond frankie: leadership. ballack can win a game on his own. but not frank -- at least not that i've seen yet.
