Right now I think it's got to be Ronaldinho, who would be a bargain at pretty much any price. I do think that Cristiano Ronaldo has a chance to make 18m look like a heck of a deal, but that's a few years off at least.

When transfers are figured out, does the transfer involve salary and a finacial amount for the trade so to speak?

like canadian gooner i think the obvious answer is ronaldinho. but after that the question becomes a fun one. i think for the price there are two that stand out as great: 1. makelele 2. kaka.

makalele is one of the great unsung rocks of every team he plays on. he kept real madrid steady. he kept the french national side steady. he keeps chelsea steady. those great teams work around the hub of his play. he makes very good players great. and he is a steal at €20m.

kaka, as much as i hate the guy, and i do, is, apart from ronaldhino, the deadliest attacking midfielder in europe today. he picks apart awesome italian defenses all the time, and that's hard to do. he's a super steal at €10m.

but i think jose morinho should sneak on here as the "transfer" steal of them all. chelsea getting him off porto was nothing short of a coup.

Incidentally the transfer amount has nothing to do with salary. Basically before a team can negotiate with a player from another team they must agree on a price with his team. That transfer fee is the amount that will be paid if the player is willing to sign a new contract with the purchasing team. If the player doesn't agree to a new contract, no money is exchanged. So, Shaun Wright-Phillips could have said no to Chelsea regardless of how much the transfer fee was (admittedly for a young player like him, it wasn't a difficult choice).

Much different from North American sports where a players contract moves with him, in European football the player signs a contract with the specific team and must agree to a new deal before they switch teams.

And back on topic, I agree that Mourinho probably the biggest transfer steal ever.
