the t & t bobsled team
an incredible performance by trinidad and tobago. how could they possibly come in and get a draw against anyone else in their group -- let alone a win? and things went horribly wrong for them and they still made the draw. their main keeper, jack, goes down with injury just before the game starts and shaka hyslop is forced to come in; they lose john to a red card (a second yellow for a two legged tackle) at the beginning of the second half; yet they pulled off the draw.
and what makes it more remarkable is that sweden, although they were trying to be too pretty in the first half, were far and away the best team playing football in group b today.
england were absolute crap against paraguay, and they were just damn lucky that paraguay topped their crapness. england should have won by a 5 - nil scoreline, and the best they could muster was a paraguay own goal and a stupendously boring, barely successful, shutting up of shop. england and their fans should be ashamed, and they should be worried that sven's tactical changes meant setting up the most dour england side he has and removing joe cole, the only england player who showed up for the whole match.
go t & t go.
now it's the cote d'ivoire v. argentina

england didn't perform, i will agree (with the exception of j.cole), but there's no shame here. they had a bad game, and hopefully its their only one.
or, for me, hopefully it's the shape of things to come ;)
btw...i don't really expect any english fans to BE ashamed. i know if france wins the same way i'll just groan, take the win, and sleep peacefully.
England has the players, but then again, they always did. But like the Netherlands and Spain, the English have the habit of getting too little out of the talent they have in their national team.
It is a shame that Paragay left Barreto on the bench. He's not a world class player, but he is the kind of midfielder that might have given them just that little extra to get a draw.
And i agree with you that Sweden was by far the better team in their match against T&T. But i'm really happy things turned out the way they did. Not in the least for their coach Leo Beenhakker. It is really cool that he get's this kind of success at the end of his career.
Of course i have also been watching Argentina - Ivory Coast. It will be really hard for the Dutch to qualify with teams like these in the same group. We might have a chance against Ivory Coast. Argentina is another matter though. Maybe their style of football is not always nice to look at, but they do have all the pieces in place.
that argentina v. ivory coast game was the best so far. so proud of the africans for not lying down after they were losing. and you are so right, dollev, the argentinians aren't pretty, but they are good everywhere on the pitch. any team that can sit tevez and messi and still score two against africa's best defense is a serious contender for the cup.
