magisterial
i'm sure many of you were expecting me to write a big, expansive, excited take on france and brazil last night, but i thought it better to let the whole experience sink in before i got started. plus, knowing that most of my friends have seen their teams crash out makes me sensitive to your feelings (sorry dollev and taras and canadian gooner and gio).
i am ready now, though, so here goes:
i have heard commentators over the last few years using the word "magisterial" to describe the performance of a team, and i've always thought it was a bit much. until yesterday. for that was exactly what the french defeat of brazil was -- magisterial. with all the experience necessary to come into a game with authority, and just enough youth to envigorate the oldsters, france looked like brazil and brazil looked average. from around the tenth minute on, france took control and never let go, never ever looking like they were going to let brazil back into the game.
the french midfield made the brazilian midfield of ronaldhino, junihno, gilberto silva, ze roberto and kaka disappear. only ze roberto looked consistently threatening, but even he was well and completely controlled by vieira, ribery, malouda, makele and zidane. france didn't make the brazilians look bad, but they did make them look like a good team struggling against superior skill, and what a feat that was for the french: anyone making the brazilians look inferior have more than done their job.
everyone's talked about the magic of zidane yesterday, and it was magic. he was back to his old best. not as fast, surely; but he was crafty, spot on with his crosses (particularly the cross that bounced from henry's foot to the back of the net), and a tower of calm and strength. it was his game yesterday, his greatest in years, and it was a joy to watch such a fantastic player being great again. he was the magister that made the french victory magisterial.
still, there were three other exceptional french performances that made the game a wonder to watch -- even for neutrals (of which many shared the experience with me yesterday). patrick vieira and claude makelele were both perfect. it was they who gave zidane the time and space to weave his magic. it was they who shut down ronaldhino and kaka. it was they who started the moves forward. and patty was always ready to move into the attack. the other was frank ribery. he is the future of france, and he's a damn fine little player. ugly he may be, but his football belies his physical appearance. he is elegant, fast, tricky and tenacious. he is thrilling. and we definitely haven't seen his best yet.
which leads me to the hope i have for reaching the finals. we still haven't seen anywhere near the best from henry. he's been playing well, but he's been getting caught offside (and genuinely so) too much, and he's been a little off pace. but i saw the stirrings of henry greatness yesterday when he appeared, totally unmarked, at the far post and poke-volleyed zidane's perfect cross past a helpless dida. it was a hint of the great henry that arsenal fans know and love, and it looks to me as though he's going to be showing up for real in one of the next two games. if that henry shows up no one else will have to do a damn thing. he can win it all by himself.
now, of course, france is mostly old and they may have spent themselves against brazil, but there's a feeling these guys are exuding that makes me think they will be in the final. regardless, i feel privileged as a france fan (and relieved) to have witnessed their performance against brazil. at this point i no longer have to care about our sturdy but tired performance against switzerland, our lazy capitulation to a surprise draw against an energetic south korea and our unconvincing win against togo. a strong victory against perennially weak spain gave me hope and that hopes has now been fulfilled. france played like champions against the champions. and for all french fans everywhere we can hold our heads high once again (2002 is now just a painful memory).
allez les bleus! vive la france!

i'm so happy that brazil is OUT! and even happier that it was france that took them out - i didn't want them to make it past the quarter finals!
however, my england is gone so now i cheer on the french (don't tell my family i'm not cheering for italy). deep down i think germany is destined to win this (now), but i'll pull for the blues. it is my color after all!
germany winning this world cup will set football back 10-15 years. i think i hate germany more than brad hates brazil.
i'm going for italy tonight.
wow - why hate the germans? i'm seriously asking because i know why i hate brazil...but i've never heard anyone talk about why they hate germany.
most people who hate germany do so because of world history rather than for footballing reasons. i don't know if it is the same for taras, but i have heard germany hatred before and it has always been because they are german.
it just struck me that the comment "will set football back 10-15 years" was what everyone was saying about greece's euro victory because of their stifling football (which, so far, hasn't come to pass). so i wonder what element of an ATTACKING german side could possibly set football back 10-15 years, unless of course one is a proponent of defensive football and wants football to return to the stifling world of cattenacio.
OK, there seems to be a lot of hatred for Brazil around here. Does anybody care to offer an explanation? As far as I know there is no limits on the length of comments :) The only teams I've cheered against in this World Cup have been Italy (boring style and massive corruption) and the US (political/cultural reasons - not necessarily football related). And I've also cheered against both Rooney and C. Ronaldo. I was so hoping they would get into a brawl :)
italy is boring style and massive corruption? boring style and massive corruption is the epitome of germany.
italy, even when purely defensive make it exciting, germany is always boring, regardless of how they play.
i just hate what they do on the field. it's not much to look at. it's only fitting that in order for greece to win a euro, they needed a german's guidance. i also dislike the fact that neither podolski nor klose are germans yet play for them. but that's more their fault than the federation's "player hunt". the fact that germany need legioners to play well at home is embarrasing.
not since beckenbauer has there been an exciting german player. them beating the czechs in that bore of a game in euro 96 makes me hate them even more.
i hope they lose 14-1 today, but knowing their nazi counterparts aren't much better, it won't happen. all in all, germany losing 3rd place match would kick ass.
i just wonder if brad would like them as much as he does if lehmann wasn't in net for arse.
Also, how can you cheer against C. Ronaldo? Rooney, whom I also like, I understand, but C. Ronaldo? He's an amazing player, LOVES to play, is patriotic, respects his opponents, hates to lose, loves his teammates. What do you not like about him?
I loved the part where he cried after getting injured in that Holland match. The fact that he couldn't help hsi teammates win was harder for him to take than almost getting his leg seperated from his body. I wish everyone was like him.
I cheer against Cristiano Ronaldo for a few reasons, none of which are necessarily good :)
1. He's never really proven anything. Yes, he has tons of talent for doing tricks, but at some point he needs to learn that his stepovers need to lead to scoring chances. It's fun to watch players make fancy moves but if you trip over your own feet on the fifth consecutive stepover then what's the point? With the talent Ronaldo has he may someday become a great player but he's not there yet. Which leads to point 2.
2. Because he plays for Man Utd he is the greatest thing since sliced bread. The hype around him and Rooney is out of proportion to what they accomplish. When Man Utd fans talk of him as being worth £30 million plus it gets to me.
3. The whining and diving piss me off. This is starting to catch up with him though and the refs are refusing to call legitimate fouls on him (much like Jose Antonio Reyes). He isn't the worst diver in the league, but he is right up amongst the leaders.
4. He plays for Manchester F'n United (though this looks like it might change pretty quick).
5. He just seems very arrogant (this is a hard one to justify)
brad would definitely like germany as much if lehmann didn't play for arse. he was cheering for germany in the last world cup as soon as france was out and lehmann wasn't on arsenal yet, nor did he play in the cup.
brad likes germany because he watched a lot of bundesliga in la and came to like a bunch of the players and the style. he likes the german determination and organization.
so really, it has nothing to do with lehmann.
mad jens does rock though!
